Weapons & Ammo for Self-Defense
When the social and economic crunch time comes, and our society begins falling apart because of super high oil prices, it will be too late to buy firearms and ammunition. Each person needs to learn as much as possible about guns for self-defense, pick weapons that fit well and practice with those you have chosen.
It might be a good idea to get a semi-automatic rifle in .308 or .223 which are the most common military and police ammunition. Also, handguns in .45 ACP, .40, and 9mm are used by military and police and are the best choice. Military and police caliber ammo will be available after others are gone. If you like revolvers rather than semi-automatic pistols then the .357/38 is a good choice.
Include a good rifle and pistol/revolver in .22 LR. They are easy to shoot, and the ammo and guns are not expensive. The little 22 makes a great rabbit, squirrel, or bird hunting gun if you are hungry. The 22 also has the advantage in that it does not make much noise.
The best rifle, pistol, or revolver is the one you know and feel comfortable with!
The author's choices are the Armalite AR10 A4, a military style semi-automatic .308 rifle; the Ruger Mini-14 which is a semi-automatic .223 rifle, or if you can afford the AR-15 that is a very good choice; a Ruger P89 which is a 9mm semi-auto pistol; the Glock 23, a .40 caliber semi-auto pistol; and the Mossberg 590 and 500. The Remington 870 is also a very good shotgun. My shotgun holds 8 rounds in the tube, 1 in the chamber if loaded (chambered for fire) and 2 rounds stored in the stock. There is comfort with having 3000 rounds of ammo for each rifle, 1000 for each shotgun, and 500 rounds for each handgun. Remember that a society does not need to take gun-weapons away, but just stop allowing, or limit the sale of ammunition to prevent people from defending themselves.
These purchases are expensive but with care will last a very long time. For rifle and pistols you will need to purchase extra magazines. they do wear out. The Mini-14 Ranch rifle is a wonderful and inexpensive semi-automatic rifle, but it only comes with one 5 round magazine so you should consider getting a bunch of 20, or 30 round magazines for it. Get good ones because the cheapies will let you down and might get you killed! The same is true with other weapons, extra mag's for the pistols is essential also. Get needed cleaning supplies to care for your guns. My plan is to be able to clean my guns for many years (end of my life expectancy) with the supplies I have, knowing that getting the stuff in the future is unlikely.
For about $1300, depending on when and where purchased, you can get the Ruger Mini-14 Ranch Rifle (.223 can be used for hunting small game like deer, but bullet choice and good shoot placement is crucial, and remember to check local hunting laws); the Ruger P89 (9mm), and the Mossberg 590 Persuader (recommend 12 gauge 00 buck-shot and some slugs for hunting). Use your tax refund, or put them on lay-away. My local sporting goods store has a very small selection so I had the store order what I need and put the guns on lay-away. I would not hesitate to arm everyone in my family with these weapons. I am betting my life on there quality and usefulness in the purpose for which I purchased them. I love my Armalite AR-10 A4, a military style semi-automatic .308 rifle. It can be used for self-defense with great effect and can be used for hunting anything in North-America, but this one gun cost me more than all my others put together. Also, the .308 ammo is significantly more expensive. I am happy to have it but I would encourage folks to get the aforementioned weapons, or similar, first and then buy the larger caliber, hard hitting .308 semi-auto rifle. If you want a bigger bullet like the .308 because of its greater distance (easily 500-600 yards for the average shooter and maybe 1000 yards for a very good shooter), or for hunting then consider a bolt action rifle like the Remington 700. It is cost effective, and I plan on getting one myself. Get a good scope and your zone of self-defense begins at over a half mile away!
Three good choices (Mini-14, Ruger 9mm, Mossberg shotgun) but there are many more. Make your choice and then practice, practice, practice until your choice feels part of you.

Include a shotgun if you can. Many people would say that if they could have only one gun it would be a shotgun. It does many things very well!

Mossberg 590 Persuader 12 gauge Shotgun

The basic 12 gauge # 00 (9 Pellot, 2 ¾") will do you right for hunting or self-defense, but include some others like # 4 (good for defense inside or around buildings and small game/bird hunting ), and rifled slug shot for deer hunting, defense or similar use.

Ruger Mini-14 Ranch Rifle .223/5.56. Once you get used to the peep sights they are great, but a scope can be put on this also.

Get yourself loaded up with Wolf (polymer sealed) .223 ammo for your Mini-14. Then, get as much top-quality American ammo as you can afford for hunting and distance shooting.

Ruger P89 9mm

Get good (polymer sealed) 9mm storage ammo from "Wolf." Again, after getting a good amount of storage ammo buy yourself American ammo for self-defense. The "Wolf" works well for me but I really like some top-quality hollow-point handgun ammo, but it is very expensive.

Remington Model 700 VSF (Varmint Synthetic Fluted)
This .308 rifle with a good scope will do you proud.

Wolf .308/7.62 (polymer sealed) "ball" or "full metal jacket" ammo is good enough for most defense needs. For hunting or long range self-defense use something like a soft-point/hollow-point boat-tail match (competition) quality bullet.

This pair of semi-automatic .308/7.62 are two of the best.

Armalite AR 10 A4 (flat top for scope) Armalite AR 10 A2 ( carrying handle with built in sight

I do recommend the 22 for the following reasons!
These guns are not expensive, and the bullets are very cheap so a person can go out and shoot all day for fun, they are great to practice with and develop good trigger control and aiming skills.
The 22 LR (long-rifle) is a very small bullet with limited one-round stopping power so just shoot the perpetrator a few more times in some good places.

I Love My Walter P22 (Check Tactical Innovations For Accessories like threaded barrel adapter for suppressor, and scope mount.)

Taurus .22 LR, 10 Rounds, Semi-Auto Rifle

The revolver and pump action rifle (below) should last for generations with only cleaning. Get these two and 50,000 rounds of ammo for advantage in the post-industrial future!

I recommend that you consider purchasing "Wolf" ammo for the bulk of your stored ammo needs. Choose the polymer sealed ammo which is new. Wolf, a Russian manufacturer, in years past used a lacquer sealer which many people complained about because it made weapons cleaning more work. I have used the Wolf ammo and am very happy with its performance and the price is very affordable. For long distance shooting, or hunting, I prefer to have the best American made ammo that I can afford at the time. But, for a fire-fight in a survival self-defense situation (one person could use hundreds of rounds of ammo in one fight) the Wolf will do you good and not drive you into bankruptcy buying it. You can order Wolf ammo on line at many places, do an internet search or go to "Cheaper Than Dirt" at (www.cheaperthandirt.com) or "Sportsman's Guide" at (www.sportsmansguide.com), or Cabela's at (www.cabelas.com). Keep as much as you can afford.
Beware of the people who only have guns and ammo, and have not developed or pursued all of the other areas of survival as outlined on Peak Oil Crisis - Prepare To Survive at (www.3k88.com). Their intention is obvious in that they intend to take from you!
These are examples of very good guns, but there are many more. If money is tight, good previously-owned guns are always available. Buy as much ammo as you can afford and store it in a secure, cool and dry place. You will also need some good knives to use as weapons, for preparing meat and hides from hunting, or other task.
Your goal should be no less than 6 inch target bullet hole groups at 100 yards with the rifle and a 6 inch grouping at 25 yards with your handgun. If you think that archery would be a fun hobby you can add a compound bow to your selection. They are great for hunting and offer silence in self-defense. Accuracy of 6 inch arrow groupings at 25 yards is good enough, and a bow can be a flame thrower or grenade launcher (small pipe bombs), but the law will have something to say about doing this so be wise.
