A concern in addition to radioactive fallout should be EMP (Electro Magnetic Pulse) which is a radio wave energy surge that damages electronics. As few as one medium size nuclear weapon exploded a few hundred miles above Kansas would likely destroy much of the United States systems dependent on electricity (cars, home, business, industry), and several EMP bombs would make us look a lot like the stone age. Nothing, or very few things, will work and what you have in the form of supplies, clothing, and hand tools may be all you will have for a very, very long time. This is why having a bug-out "jump-bag" or emergency kit (backpack, synthetic sleeping bag, tarp, two weeks food and water, a little rope, water proof matches, first aid kit, 2 knives (change of clothing, boots, jacket, gloves, hat, 1 folding pocket knife, 1 fixed blade hunting/fighting knife, a little duct tape, some small amount of wire, a type of a utility tool (pliers, screwdriver, wire cutter), small ax, small shovel, compass and maps) and this jump bag must be carried so not too heavy. I also like a 22 rifle/pistol for emergency use. This bag is useful at the time of a fire, avalanche, mudslide, earthquake, flood, tornado, hurricane, war, terrorist attack, militia attack, gang attack, or any event that separates you from your normal life support system. Each persons jump-bag needs are different and you can decide for yourself what you may need but remember that those people who stay healthy, safe, uninjured, with adequate food and water, and acquire shelter for the first critical days after an emergency have a much better chance of survival and recovery.
